Calculate the Cost of Savings

Work out how much you’d spend on cigarettes in a month.  Look at our Investment page to see how much you would save daily, weekly, monthly or yearly if you quit smoking now. Quitting can also help you save for some more substantial purchases surprisingly quickly.  By giving up smoking, your extra cash can build up over a relatively short period and start to make a real difference.    Set up a new savings account that you can keep separate from your everyday account, and transfer your sum once a month (possibly on payday).   If you set up an account you don’t have access to for a fixed time, you won’t be able to fritter away your savings.  To make things a little easier, set up a standing order, so the payment is made automatically.  If you were to save this money, what would you spend it on … a holiday for the family … a new car …

Think about your health

Tobacco use not only reduces your life expectancy but your quality of life as well. Many medical conditions caused by smoking can result not just in death but in living for years with disabling health problems. It is estimated that more than 204,700 years of healthy life were lost in Australia, in 2003, as a result of smoking.  Some other examples include your skin getting more wrinkled and you get less oxygen to your blood.

Think about your loved ones

Exposure to second-hand smoke has severe consequences for those who breathe it.  Exposing your child or spouse to second-hand smoke is more harmful to them than you.  Of the more than 4000 chemicals present in tobacco smoke, more than 60 have been identified as cancer-causing chemicals, 11 of which are known to cause cancer in humans and eight that probably cause cancer in humans.

Write down why you want to quit.

There are lots of reasons to quit smoking. Many people are motivated to quit for their family and friends, health benefits or to save money. Make a list of your reasons, then post them somewhere you will see them so you can be encouraged by them every day.
